Is a city like Airdrie ready for such a change?

The city of Airdrie has a very open and honest approach for new development and tries their best to keep Airdrie going in the right direction. The first step in this process is to get to know the intent and overall idea of a suggested project and guide the team in an early planning stage to avoid costly mistakes down the road. So we were very excited to be able to discuss our project idea for an eco-neighbourhood with representatives – and we were surprised when we were standing in front of 15 people representing all kinds of planning and development departments from the city of Airdrie.

Our presentation and project was attended with high interest and positive nodding. They appreciate that it is a very ambitious and holistic project. They discussed with us different zoning options we could look at (direct control, condo development, etc) they were referring to a few building code issues (the size of streets we will need for fire trucks and snow removal etc.) that make it difficult to have a community looking different than what is built at the moment. They really liked our urban garden ideas and greenhouses and love tiny/small homes. There are many green fans within the department and they are just waiting for projects like ours to happen. Unfortunately we found out that the city itself doesn’t own land that is available to start a development. Going to the land owners and/or developers to gain access / buy a piece of land for a sustainable community is one option they suggested.

In all, as we suspected; It’s going back to the drawing boards, promoting, finding land, investors and a business model to make this a reality.

To end, feedback from like-minded people like you would be appreciated, we are moving forward and if you know of any cities, people, farmers, land owners, investors that are open to work with us and make this happen, let’s hear about it!

The project consists of:

Establish a new kind of community that includes

  • Dwellings at very affordable prices (tiny houses, small houses, less than 200k$).
  • Passive dwellings with high energy efficiency.
  • Permaculture, greenhouses, local fruit and vegetable production.
  • Fish farming, local farms, etc.
  • Common currency, stimulate local purchases and local businesses.
  • Assistance and incentives for sustainable development businesses.
  • Production and sale of renewable energies.
  • Offices, learning center, stores.
  • And more…
